William O. Smith IV, M.D.

SMITH, William O. IV, M.D., 86, of Springfield, OH, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at Hospice of Dayton Hospital in Dayton, OH. Born April 21, 1931, in Tulsa, OK, he was the son of the late William O. Smith III and Grace West Smith. He was a graduate of Lawrence Prep School in Lawrenceville, NJ, attended Northwestern University for two years, a 1953 graduate of Oklahoma University and a 1957 graduate of University of Oklahoma Medical School. He served his residency at the University of Kansas from 1957 to 1963. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1963 to 1966, stationed at Tachikawa AFB at the time of his honorable discharge as a captain. He was a practicing neurosurgeon in Denver, CO from 1966 to 1974 and had lived in Springfield, OH since 1974, moving from Denver. On December 28, 1989, he married Colleen Kennedy who survives of the home. He was a Catholic. He was a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and American College of Surgeons. In addition to his wife Colleen, he is survived by five children: William O. Smith V and wife Patricia of Houston, TX, Malcom Bromley Smith and wife Peggy of Columbia, MO, Paul Andrew Smith and wife Toni of Denver, CO, Lila Suzanne Smith of Denver, CO and Kiffin Matthew Smith and wife Amy of Denver, CO; six grandchildren: Ryne and Dallas Smith, Dylan and Kyle Smith, and Veronica and Lauren Smith; two stepchildren, Charles James Townsend III and wife Melissa and Elizabeth Higgins Davis of Beavercreek, OH; three step-grandchildren, Pierson Davis, Grayson Davis and Charlie Jane Townsend; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death two sisters, Barbara Lorene Millard, and Martha Suzanne Smith in infancy. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 5, 2017, at Conroy Funeral Home, 1660 E. High St., Springfield, OH 45505. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Bethel Baptist Cemetery north of Marshall, MO.
