Hearlihy,Thomas M., 93, of Springfield, passed away at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, June 24,2018 in Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born at home at 914 Link Ave. on September 4, 1924 the son of Edward and Nora (Welsh) Hearlihy. While growing up he worked at Kueger's Drug Store & Malt Shop and Clauers grocery on Lagonda. Tom attended Wittenberg College where he played all three sports while working at Bauer Bros. at night to pay for it. During this time he met the love of his life, Mary Catherine Garrigan with whom he was married for 55 years. Tom worked at Crowell Collier before becoming head of the Typewriter and Adding Machine Sales and Service department at Garrigan's. He and his wife Mary founded Hearlihy & Co, selling Drafting instruments to schools all over the United States. Tom remained at Hearlihy & Co as C.E.O. for 23 years before retiring in 1992. Tom was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #624, and the Elks. As a devout Catholic he attended daily Mass. For 35 years during the winter Tom lived in Port Charlotte, Fla. where he enjoyed playing many card games with friends. As an avid traveler he and his wife Mary visited over 65 countries, including 8 times in Ireland to stay with his dear cousins in County Galway. Tom attributed his long life to four things: family, religion, exercise and drink! His sense of humor and love for life will be missed by all who knew him, he was one-of-a-kind! Survivors include his three children, Peggy Johnson, Dan (Amy) Hearlihy all of Springfield and Tim (Laura) Hearlihy of Centennial, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Sandi Hearlihy; seven grandchildren, Megan, Casey, Caitlin, Erin, Therese, Claire, Kevin and six great grandchildren, Jacob, Alaya, Rory, Payton, India and Aiden. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 2005 and son, Patrick in 2014. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday in CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St Teresa Church. Entombment will be in St. Bernard Mausoleum. Please send donations to the Hearlihy scholarship Fund at CCHS.
