BETTON, M/Sgt. Retired Roger Alan, 81, of Springfield, passed away Friday December 22, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Roger was a friend to everyone he would meet. He was kind, caring, considerate, generous and non-judgmental. He was ornery and loved to make people laugh. Roger spent his free time following his grandsons around to watch them play football and baseball. He was their biggest fan. Roger was born December 28, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Kenneth Elmo and Marjorie (Sanford) Betton. He was raised in Willard, Ohio and graduated from Willard High School (Go Flash!). Upon graduation Roger joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 20 years. During his military career he was stationed at RAF Cranage England where he met and married the love of his life for over 60 years, Patricia Ann Collard of Denver, Colorado. Roger was deployed to multiple places throughout his military career. Scott AFB, IL from 1958 through 1967. In 1967 he was assigned to Vietnam for a year. After returning from home from Vietnam, he was again assigned to Scott AFB until 1969 when he became an advisor to the 34th Reserves in San Antonio, TX until retirement in 1974. Upon retirement, he brought his family to Springfield, Ohio. He worked at 4 Seasons, Hauck Brothers and Stevenson's Heating. He then worked for Clark County as an electrical inspector until retirement in 2008. Roger is survived by wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (Collard) Betton - a true love story; four children, Kim Betton, Scott & Kristi Betton, Tammy Crippen and Peggy & Shawn Allen; grandchildren, Amber Betton, Ashley and Allison Crippen, Kylie & Doug Campbell, Kenzie Betton, Thomas and Eli Allen and Chelsea & Lee Nelson and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Roger Crippen and a special nephew, Denny McFarland. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Daljeet Singh, Dr. Stephen Oehlers, Dr. Cleanne Cass, Springfield Regional Cancer Center, Forest Glen and Hospice of Dayton. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday in the funeral home with Chaplain Janie Brewer officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Dayton.
