SMITH, Richard P. "Sparky", 84, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2015 in his residence. He was born November 26, 1931 in Springfield the son of Edward J. and Margaret L. (McCurdy) Smith. Dick was a 1950 graduate of Catholic Central. He enjoyed three things in life, family, friends and baseball. He was a tv repairman for Sayers Appliance for 31 years, retiring in 1985. After retiring, he and Corrine volunteers at Paint Creek State Park for 15 years and met many great friends. He enjoyed collecting Ronson Lighters, license plates and signs. Dick loved going to garage sales and talking about good times. During his life he was a landlord of several properties. For 40 years he was a coach of a number of ball teams at Perrin Woods, South Vienna, Davey Moore and Lagonda Fields. If you played baseball during the last 40 years, you know "Sparky". Our home and yard was always open to neighbors and friends. There was always something going on. He didn't know a stranger. He sure had a sweet tooth and loved his iced tea and cigarettes. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Corrine (Shirey) Smith, who has taken great care of him over the last 5 years after his first stroke; 5 children, Mary & Roy Storer, Connie Smith, Mike "Tiki" & Teri Smith, June & John Kame and Rick & Kim Smith; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and McCurdy cousins, especially Elaine, Mary Lou and Pat; longtime friends, Sonny & Caroline Rankin, Roger & Pat Binegar, Jim Maddy and Roy & Bev Marrs, who were always there for him. "Stay Happy". He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Tommy. The family would like to thank Holly and Barb with Elderly United and the staff at Community Mercy Hospice. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 pm in the funeral home with Deacon Norm Horstman. "Get home before dark."
