George W Belcher, 91 of Springfield, passed away September 21, 2024 He was born in Boston, MA on December 28,1932 the son of Joseph and Ethel Belcher. George enlisted in The United States Marine Corp and proudly served his country in the Korean War 1952-1955 as a Sergeant attached to the 1st Marine Air Wing. After 26 years of service, he retired from the Springfield Police Division as a detective Sergeant December of 1985. George was instrumental in starting the Neighborhood Crime Watch Program in the city and the Police Athletic League Youth Program. He was the Exchange Club Police Man of the Year in 1979. George was employed for 10 years by the I-Supply company of Fairborn as the Safety and Security Director. He later worked as a contract investigator for the Department of Defense. He was a member of St Raphael Church. George was a lifelong member of K of C 624, VFW Post 1031, FOP lodge 72.
George enjoyed golf, traveling and winters in Florida. He loved his Boston Red Socks, and Cincinnati Reds.
He is survived by his wife Carole Shartran Knapp Belcher, daughter Lynne and Kurt Miller of MN, son Michael Belcher (Eric) of OH, daughter Tamera Belcher of OH, daughter Michelle and Mellisa Ross Shartran of MI. Daughter-in-laws Julie and Ray Alverado of TX Sharon and Jim Arlt of Tx, Dede Shartran and Barb Duff of FL. Granddaughter Lucie and Patrick Cunningham and great grandchildren, Miller and Shea of NC, granddaughter Olivia Belcher (Max) of TX, grandson Brett and Natalie Miller and great grandchildren Korie and Addie of MN, grandsons Justin and Mark Jenkins Belcher of OH. Grandson 2nd Lt. Zachery and Cora Shartran, great granddaughter Addie of MI, Granddaughter Chelsea and Ryan Rodgers, great grandsons Landon and Brantley of FL, granddaughter, Portia Stanku (Jordan)of IL, sister-in-law Shirley Chesney of, TX, nephew Bob Golden & Liz Limber OH, niece Cheri Davenport, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Carolyn Fick Belcher, sons John and Patrick, brother Joseph and Loretta, step-children Yvonne, Michael and Patrick Shartran.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Raphael Catholic Church. Following Mass there will be a Full Military Service at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior, from 9:30 - 10:30 in the church.
