Frieda R. McCann

McCann, Frieda R., 90, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was born on June 4, 1923 in Cambridge, OH the daughter of the late John M. and Lela (Norris) Ray. She and her husband George M. met while both were students at The Ohio State University and were married while both were undergraduates in July of 1944. She was awarded a BS in Penology from The Ohio State University in 1946, a degree in Education from the University of Dayton, and later a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh where she became a member of the Beta Phi Mu Honorary. Frieda moved to Springfield in 1947 with her husband and built a home called Tall Pine Gate in southwest Springfield, which they occupied happily for sixty-seven years. She was a member of St. Raphael Church. She retired from the Springfield City Schools in 1987 after a long tenure as Director of Educational Media. During her active professional life, and particularly after her retirement, she has volunteered her time and talents to numerous civic enterprises. The most notable was providing library services to the inmates of the Clark County Jail for many years. She is survived by her husband of seventy years, George M. McCann; four children, Christy A. Tidwell of Zionsville, IN, George R. (Diana) McCann of Hilliard, OH, Pamela (Ernst) von Rahl of Mishawaka, IN and Lorrie (Alfred) Twainy of Las Vegas, NV; six grandchildren, Nicole, Shannon, Zakie, Jean Paul, Samia and Anastasia; and five great-grandchildren, Eva, Sara, Sawyer Avery and Emilia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Robson. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in St. Raphael Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Springfield Foundation.
