Eugene "Gene" Harkins

HARKINS, Eugene "Gene", 80, of Springfield passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 in Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born May 18, 1934 in Springfield the son of Eldon and Mary (Estep) Harkins. Gene enlisted in the United States Air Force in May 1951where he served as an airman for 2 years before being discharged. In 1955 he enlisted in the Ohio Air National Guard where he was a technician assigned to aircraft maintenance until 1977. He was then assigned as branch chief of the weapons section until his retirement in October 1988. Gene was a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Elks #51, VFW, American Legion, Clark County Shrine Club, Antioch Shrine Club and was a longtime member of Northwood Hills Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Charlene; two daughters, Rhonda Summers and Brenda (James) Thornton; one granddaughter, Christi Koster; two great grandchildren, Jakob Harris and Seth Hoffman; stepmother, Margie Harkins; one sister, Susan Arnold; four brothers, Scott, Neil, Keith and Kent Harkins. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Hoffman and a sister, Judy Hoskinson. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Allen officiating. Entombment will follow in Ferncliff Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or High Street United Methodist Church.
