Ellen Nora Shay

SHAY, Ellen Nora, 73, of Springfield, born to Thomas and Genevieve (Hayes) Campbell, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017 at the Masonic Rehabilitation Center. She graduated in 1961 from Catholic Central High School. She later graduated in 1962 as an LPN from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and worked, for several years, as a nurse on the second floor south section delivery room before moving on to work for Dr.'s Beasley and Smith, OBGYN's. In 1964 she married Robert L. Shay. She gave birth and raised two daughters, who she loved very much, Robin Shay and Kelly Shay. She continued to work helping her husband get his degrees until retiring in 1973 due to illness. She loved her heritage which included her father, Tom Campbell, who while working at International Harvester in the paint department, organized its union as well as most of the unions in southern Ohio. Her grandmother was Ellen O'Brien Campbell, whose uncle, Dave Stewart, built the Snyder Park Lagoon's stone walk over bridge. Dave also planted all the beautiful peony bushes in Snyder Park. Her great grandmother worked as a maid in the Hertzler House. Ellen will be remembered as a strong woman who loved her family and friends and made her feelings and opinions heard. Her two granddaughters, Shay Ellen Thomas and Maya Jordan Shay, were the center of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Alice Mullinix and her brother, Jim Campbell. Ellen's other survivors include her sister in law, Bonnie Campbell, her beloved Brother & Sister in law's David M & Theresa Shay, Kathy Callison, Mary Ann Evans & close friend, Mary Katherine Sullivan & numerous nephews & nieces. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME with Deacon Norm Horstman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior.
