GIANAKOPOULOS, Dr. James G., 94, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 2, 2018, in his home, surrounded by his family. Jim was born September 7, 1924 in Urbana, Ohio to George and Antigone (Plataniotis) Gianakopoulos. He was a graduate of Springfield High School, Ohio University and Syracuse University School of Medicine. He practiced as a family physician with his partners at the Springfield Clinic for over 40 years. He was a member of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as President and a long tenure as Treasurer. He was also a past President of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and Member Emeritus of the Springfield Symphony Foundation. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. Survivors include three children, Antigone (Samuel) Petroff, Dr. George (Robin) Gianakopoulos and Dr. William (Dr. Patricia) Gianakopoulos; grandchildren, John (Kelsey) Petroff, Anna Jean Petroff, Stella Petroff, Arianna (Kyle) Clinton, James Gianakopoulos, George Gianakopoulos, Helen Gianakopoulos, William Gianakopoulos, Joseph Gianakopoulos, and Andrew Gianakopoulos; two brothers, Anthony Gianakopoulos and Aristedes (Alex) Gianakopoulos; brother-in-law, Dr. Socrates Pappas; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Jean (Pappas) Gianakopoulos, his sister, Bessie Stathopoulos, and dear friend, Flo Gibson. Visitation will be held on Sunday (today) from 2 - 5 p.m. in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME, with Trisagion Services being held at 4:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Dumitru Rusu officiating. Interment will be held in Ferncliff Cemetery on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church or the Springfield Foundation, Dr. James and Anna Jean Gianakopoulos Fund.
