Charles Oliver Kelly

Kelly, Charles Oliver, 81, passed away on Friday December 16, 2016 in Springfield. He was born on October 25, 1935 in Springfield, the youngest child and only son of Oliver Joseph and Marguerite (Scully) Kelly. Both his parents and sisters Barbara Ann (Hughey) DeWitt and Helena (William) Dargin preceded him in death, along with his faithful canine companion Sully. Chuck is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon S. ( Rogers) Kelly; a son, Kevin Michael of Dayton; a daughter Karen Michele of Columbus, a granddaughter, Allison Paglialunga; grandsons, Jens Paglialunga, Joel Alexander Kelly; sisters-in-laws, Joyce Underwood (Marvin), Carol Kaup, Kristin Skeens (Bill); brother-in-law, John Rogers along with many nieces and nephews. Chuck graduated from St. Joseph School, Catholic Central High School (Class of 1954), and the University of Dayton (Class of 1961)where he earned a bachelor's degree in Economics and completed graduate work on a Master's of Business Administration. Chuck served for seven years in the Ohio Army National Guard and the Ohio Air Force National Guard and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas and Fort Knox, Kentucky while serving as a medic. He received an honorable discharge in 1967. Chuck worked for the International Harvester Company, later known as Navistar, retiring after 39 years as an inventory auditor; during that period he also served 12 years as the treasurer of the United Auto Worker Local #658. He briefly was involved in state politics and ran successfully in the Democratic primary election for State Representative before eventually losing to an incumbent in the general election of 1968. He was the former vice-president of the Young Democrats of Clark County, was active in the University of Dayton Alumni Association, served on the Urban Renewal Advisory Committee, member of Elderly United, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, #397. He was a member of the St. Teresa Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Tuesday December 20th at 11am at St. Teresa Church with Father John McQuarrie presiding. Friends and family members are invited to celebrate Charles' life and meet with family members one hour before Mass in the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Animal Welfare League of Clark County. Arrangements are being handled by the CONROY FUNERAL HOME.
