Sauers, Charles E., 92, of Springfield, passed away peacefully at 11:10 pm, Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Forest Glen Health Campus. He was born January 31, 1923 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Roy and Mary (Davis) Sauers. Charlie graduated from Chillicothe High School. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a High Speed Radio Operator in World War II where he sent and received radio messages in International Morse Code. He is a graduate of The Ohio University with a Bachelor Degree in Commerce. He retired from Springfield News and Sun as a National Advertising Manager after 38 years of service. Charlie was married to Marilyn R. Sauers for 57 wonderful years and together they raised 5 children. He was an avid woodcarver and enjoyed photography, canoeing, fishing, camping, gardening and bird watching. He had a keen eye for discovery of the natural world which he practiced on many a journey on backcountry roads. He is preceded in death by his wife Marilyn and brother William Leroy Sauers. He is survived by his children and their families: Steven Sauers (companion Debra Wood) of Sarasota, Florida, Judy (Doug) Montanus of Springfield, Jane (Richard) Rice of Greenwood, Indiana, Laurie (Paul) Burbidge of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and Linda (Keith Zerkle) Sauers of Springfield; eight grandchildren and spouse, Lisa (James) Moss, Philip Montanus (fiancée Emily Skrehot), Andrea, Anthony and Steven Rice, Randy and Brian Burbidge, and Abby Zerkle; one great granddaughter, Coraline Moss; and nephew William Geoffrey Sauers. Visitation services will be held from 12-1 p.m. Monday in CONROY FUNERAL HOME with a memorial service to follow with Rev. John MacQuarrie officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charles' name may be made to Community Mercy Hospice.
