Carolyn "Cookie" Grigiss

A heart full of love, a life well lived, a commitment to service, these attributes define the life of Carolyn K. "Cookie" Grigiss who departed this life, surrounded by her family in Miami Valley Hospital, on November 4, 2103. These attributes were instilled in Cookie and her brother, Pete, at an early age by their beloved parents, where love and loyalty to and for family, education, a strong work ethic, and participation in charitable and worthy causes, were hallmarks of character and integrity. Carolyn was born in Springfield, Ohio on February 11, 1947 to Charles P. and Eugenia C. (Paulos) Grigiss. She attended public schools in Springfield, graduating from Springfield North High School with the class of 1965. Upon graduation she completed studies at Miami Jacobs Business College earning an Associates Degree in Business Management. Cookie was employed with the United States Government in medical research at Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Upon retirement she returned to Springfield in 1998 to live and care for her mother until her death. Cookie also was employed with Assurant Insurance until 2006. She recently was employed with Springfield City Schools in food service. Cookie had a zest for life which influenced everyone she knew and met. This was an attribute of her Greek heritage. All things Greek were part of her life. Her many travels to Greece were a highlight for her. Cookie always had a frank comment and opinion for any issue. In spite of her ideas, you had to love her. Cookie was one of a kind. Cookie maintained a close relationship with a sorority of friends from her high school graduating class. These friends spent valuable times together, traveling to Chicago, Florida, New York City, Washington, D.C. and "God's Country" Greece. Cookie loved any opportunity for barbecuing and her friends were always included in these gatherings. Any and every opportunity for get togethers were first and foremost. These "Band of Sisters" are Dorothy Alexander, LuAnne Baker, Brenda Beard, Pam Fay, Linda Watson, Annabelle Webb, Monica Wolbert , as well as two deceased "sisters" Cindy Banion and Sue Reames. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and "Biscuit", companion dog. Cookie leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Nancy Grigiss, dear nephew and niece, Andrew C. and Gena M. Grigiss all of Springfield, cousins Claudia Bales of Buxton, Maine, William and George Grigiss of Brockton, Massachusetts, Emily Sklitsis and aunt, Ethel Battaglia of New York, New York, uncle and aunt Peter and Demetra Spyropoulos of Chicago, Illinois, as well as special cousins Frieda and Notis Mihas of Athens, Greece, and many other relatives in Greece and the United States. She ,also, leaves behind her companion dog "Scruffy". Carolyn was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, serving as an active board member, and the Ladies Philoptochos Society, serving as secretary. The church was very meaningful to her. Many thanks to the first responders who came to Cookie's aid at her time of need. Their selflessness in their efforts to save her home are commendable. We will never forget their diligent assistance and service. Our heartfelt gratitude to Miami Valley Hospital for the tremendous, compassionate care given to Cookie during her time there. Our thanks to Drs. Friedman, Fulchiero, Gollumudi, and Perry ; also to nurses, Christy, Emily, Karen, Lori, Michelle, Shirley, and Whitney, and "Paliative Nurse" Deb Bentley, who were so faithful with their care. Carolyn's wake will take place at the CONROY FUNERAL HOME 1660 E. High Street from 4-7 PM Friday, with Trisagion Services at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 1127 E. High Street, with Reverend Father Dumitru Rusu officiating. Her body will lie in state one hour prior in the church. Internment will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. In memoriam donations may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church or to a charity of choice. Beloved sister and sister-in-law, loving aunt, dear friend; she brought us joy and we loved her well.
